About

The purpose of MYRiveR is to strengthen the capacity of young people, their families and communities to be informed and active participants in restoring landscape health and building sustainable ways of living and working throughout river catchments.

MYRiveR is a call to young people, their families and communities along river catchments throughout the world. The project engages young people in a comprehensive investigation of the health of their entire catchment and in the development of a youth voice, vision and plans of action.

Young people and their communities work alongside and are mentored by Oz GREEN staff to:

1.     Take the pulse of the river to check on its health by conducting catchment snapshots Schools work with Oz GREEN staff to conduct a 26-point health check (environmental assessments, water quality testing, biodiversity, erosion, vegetation cover, community attitudes, ) numerous sites around their local area. This is condcuted region by region from the upper to the lower reaches of the catchment.

2.     Interpret the results of these investigations to identify how the river is important, the threats to catchment health and what is working in the community's care of the river.

3.     Develop a youth vision for the future of the river.

4.     Develop action plans for the whole river catchment and their local region.

5.    Discuss the results of their findings, vision and action plans at a Community Forum, where youth play a strong leadership role to involve the whole community in identifying issues of concern and community-wide action plans.

If you would like to get involved in assessing your own local area, we have low-cost water quality monitoring kits available - just click here - we'd love to see the results!
